The Types Of Hunting Knives

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

There are popular designs that you can choose from that have been used in hunting for many years because they work. Some knives may fold and be able to be placed into your pocket and others will have a sheath that you need to hang from your head. Whichever style of these you choose can be dependent upon your own personal preferences.

One of the main types of hunting knives is a drop point. This is a curve blade that is slightly larger and made from thicker steel than other knives. The whole blade of this knife can be used since gaining, and they can also help to reduce the amount of me wants when you’re skinning an animal. You can also use this to butcher the animal while you were out hunting, including cutting through bone, although there are other tools that do this quicker and more efficiently.

A clip point is one of the most popular blades simply because it can be used for hunting as well as general purpose work. This knife will not work as fast as the other, but it can perform the same functions. This knife does not have the same curving or thickness to the steel, but the tape is much thinner for use with Fine detail work.

There are also knives that can assist in eviscerating your game. This hook can ensure that you keep the meat free from taint so you don’t lose any edible meat. For the inexperienced, this addition can help you learn how to quickly remove the entrails from the animal by allowing you to follow the hook’s depth so you don’t cut too deeply.

You may also want to have a dedicated skinning knife so that you can quickly and efficiently remove the hide from your game. This can also be used if you self butcher your game. This tool can be valuable because it can quickly and more efficiently clean the hype from the animal.

The game size and the time you spend hunting can determine the type of knife that you need. Buying a knife that does not suit your needs will often wind up being left behind and will not assist you when you bag your game.

Hunting Dog Types – Importance Of Having The Right Dog

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

Hunter and hunting dog have developed over centuries to form a harmonious relationship and strong bond. The dog was domesticated for the sole purpose of aiding early man in finding food for survival. Because of man’s reliance on this animal, an unbreakable loyalty was formed that still exists today. Over time the different breeds developed to serve different purposes; as watchdogs, herders, and for hunting. The groups generally referred to are the general hunting dog, the sporting or gun dog, and the scent hounds.

The origin of today’s gun dog began as early as the 15th century in Western Europe. The dogs used at this time were pointers, who located game for their owners. As time passed other breeds developed to include the flushing setter and the spaniels.

Over the years different breeds were bred for different characteristics, all to aid the hunter in catching game. The pointing and flushing dogs located game; the wind hounds coursed it down; terriers went underground after the game; and the scent hounds tracked it down if it ran across country. Because of the fierce loyalty of the these hunting dogs, and their superior and friendly personalities, many dogs in the sporting group today are used at hunting lodges by professional services for hunters. These dogs take commands well from people not their owners and are very trustworthy.

Important characteristics of these hunting dogs are their high tolerance for all people, including strangers. Hunting today has become a pastime practiced by many people; the dog will not only come across many strangers, but also many other hunting dogs, so he needs to be trusted in these situations. Another important asset of the hunting dog is restraint. While hunting dogs are notoriously high energy, many have the ability to focus when on the hunt. Being quiet is often the most important characteristic while in the field, and having a dog that can’t recognize that will only botch a hunting trip.

Choosing the right dog for the hunt is important. Scent hounds are able to pick up a scent on the ground a day old; pointers are able to locate game and freeze until the hunter is able to get into position. These dogs have been bred for centuries for their job, so trying to force a dog to be what he is not will never work. With a little research a hunter can choose the perfect dog for his hunt and enjoy many years of enjoyment with his four-legged companion.

Different Types of Ammunition

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

There are many different types of ammunition and sometimes selecting the right ones can be extremely difficult. Usually the design and style of the ammunition will determine the purpose for different situations. In this article, we will discuss a few different types of ammunition and uses for them and also the reasons they can benefit you on specific jobs or hunts.

Handguns are sometimes used for hunting, but are mostly used for recreation and personal protection. Handguns are an extremely effective tool for self protection, but choosing the right ammunition is just as important as choosing the actual handgun. Defensive ammunition is designed to expand within the target rather than going all the way through the target.

Hollow points are the most commonly used defensive ammunition on the market. When fired, the pressure created in the hollowed tip when penetrating the target forces the tip to expand outwards typically resembling a mushroom. The advantage of the hollow point over other ammunition is the decreased penetration of the target for the safety of others around you. If firing rounds off in your home or apartment with other family members in the next room, penetration is a concern as it could easily travel through walls, potentially injuring your loved ones. Hollow point ammunition is safer for all parties concerned including your attacker as he is more likely to go down from one or two rounds of hollow point than six or seven rounds of other types of ammunition.

Frangible ammunition, a lot like hollow points, are also extremely effective self defense ammunition; they have the same hollowed end but are filled with tiny metal beads and covered by a polymer end cap. They are designed to break apart when they hit walls or hard surfaces preventing ricochets during close quarter combat.

FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) ammunition doesn’t expand and is made to penetrate, making this a bad choice for use as self defense ammunition. FMJ are used often by the military mostly because they hardly ever jam up making them a more reliable choice.

Shotgun ammunition has basic types of loads: buckshot, birdshot, and slug loads and are used most commonly today for sport shooting and hunting small and big game animals. The choice of caliber depends on the type of situation the firearm is being used for. Shotguns have various different uses; law enforcement officials and military personnel use them for self protection and long range shooting, sport shooters use them for clay and target shooting, and of course they are used for hunting lots of different sized animals such as bear, elk, deer, prairie dogs, rabbits, turkey, and many other types of game.

Buckshot is loaded with large diameter lead balls used for large game hunting and self defense. It is also used in riot and combat situations by police and military because this load has a lot of stopping power. Birdshot is loaded with smaller diameter pellets and is mostly used for hunting game birds. Shot size is selected not only for distance, but for game being hunted as the shot must reach the target with enough force to penetrate and kill the animal. Lead shot is the cheapest, but environmental restrictions have more hunters turning to steel shot.  Stopping power is poor with steel shot and it is only recommended for personal defense in the home. Slug shots are a solid lead shell with enormous stopping power and rifle-like performance, by firing one large projectile rather than many smaller ones. Unlike the other loads, the slug loads must be aimed like a rifle or handgun; this load ruins the shotgun’s major benefit of superior hit probability. This load is also used in law enforcement and military as a reasonable substitute for a rifle when the targets are at medium ranges.

When selecting ammunition, try to keep in mind these useful tips; American-made is the best. Stay away from foreign-made ammunition and hand loads; use manufacturer-loaded cartridges only. Here are some examples of name brand ammunition that we recommend: Federal ammunition, Cor-Bon ammunition, Hornady, Remington ammunition, Winchester or CCI ammunition.

The most common question that gets asked is: What type of ammunition to use? If you find yourself asking this question a lot, there are some different ways to find this information rather than asking someone at your local gun shop and later finding out that he has no idea what he’s talking about. Do some research on your own and find out what is best suited for your shooting needs. This is best way to find out which types of ammunition will work best for you.

Gear For All Types Of Hunting

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

A turkey hunter will be considered a seasoned professional if they were able to enlist the interest of a turkey through a variety of turkey calls. Some turkey hunters might attempt to use a wet stick to make the call and others might try to compose a musical verse through the adjustable tone features of a turkey hunting box call device. Hunters will devise a way to use all sorts of gear while hunting turkeys deep in a forest, and while they wait, they might have time to think about other gear to bring with them the next time they decide to hunt turkey.

Turkey hunters have plenty of time on their hands while hunting these feathered friends. Some will stay nestled behind a blind for most of the night knowing that the fabricated building will ward off the night chill and keep them warm until the first light of a new day arrives. Most turkey hunters will prefer to use turkey-hunting supplies like blinds that camouflage but some turkey hunters will choose to use only a camouflaged roof to keep the rain off their heads for a short while.

The turkey hunter might not care whether the call sounds like a mad wet hen or the raspy call of a tom turkey looking for a suitable mate, but they will care if the result of using this type of hunting gear will mean that there is a bird in the bag at the end of the day. Some hunters might even use cassettes and compact disk to learn how to attract a turkey through an ornate calling system.

Some instructional tapes for turkey hunting might suggest that several decoys be deployed. A turkey would feel quite comfortable in the woods if they witnessed a breeding pair of decoys in the direction that the turkey was about to roam. If a Tom turkey were to wander that way, they might find some interest in other turkey decoys that were strategically placed in the woods. The turkey hunter could make sure that every fowl present could see the bobbing heads of several turkeys as they moved up and down. These movements would make it seem to turkeys like this area would be a great area to stop and feed.

Gear for other hunting trips might be angled on shooting deer, wild boar, or black bears and the hunting gear chosen would depend on the hunting season. Hunters will always ensure that they carry a trustworthy tent in which many hunters can spend the night and sleeping bags will be included on the list for every person in the group. Every hunter will want a flashlight to use for those special trips to the woods in the middle of the night, and all hunters will appreciate at least a spray of bug repellant before nightfall.

Certain hunters might choose to wear boots with a water-resistant outsole, and others might prefer boots sized to accommodate several pairs of socks. Duck hunters are certain to want waders if a duck or a goose comes across the cross hairs of the rifle they will be toting. Hunters are sure to keep an ample supply of tree stands around so that they can line up on a buck without casting a scent. Other hunters will walk through the woods confidently knowing that the scent blockers they used at camp are camouflaging their presence in the woods nicely.
