Tennessee is a great place to hold your next bear hunting trip. They have some of the most beautiful lands and great scenery. They have an excellent sustainable bear population making it easy and simple to harvest a bear (unless you’re a novice hunter, then you’ll need some bear hunting tips). However, you’ll need to follow the regulations set by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency when bear hunting in Tennessee. As with all other states in the US you’ll need to purchase the proper hunting license and bear hunting permit. There are a few exceptions; however, you’ll need to contact the TWRA to see if you fall into any of their exemptions from a hunting license. It’s usually a good idea to obtain the license and permit anyways to prevent any issues in the future.

Hunters are limited to only one bear per calendar year in Tennessee. This can be a male or female bear; however a female bear cannot be harvest if it’s nursing cubs. A cub is considered to be a bear under the weight of 75 pounds. You need to make sure that if it’s a female bear cubs aren’t close by. Generally wait a few moments to see if they stroll up after the mother. The reproductive organs must also remain intact prior to being officially checked in. The bear can be checked in whole or field dressed, however it must still be over the 75 pound limit.

Hunters are strictly prohibited from hunting bears on private property unless the owner has given you permission. This again may effect what type of license or permit you’ll need since it’s on private property. Check with the TWRA to see what their requirements are permit and license wise for that year regarding hunting bears on privately owned properly. There is a 10 day limit on hunting near bait areas; bait must have been removed for at least 10 days prior to hunting in that area.

There are also limits on which species of bears can be harvested per year. It’s a good idea to go over some bear hunting pictures to get an idea of what specific species of bears look like. This will prevent heavy fines and possible revocation of your hunting license during your check-in.
