Visiting Montana on Your Next Road Trip

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

Craggy granite peaks, shimmering waterways, vast forests and abundant wildlife make Montana’s “Big Sky Country” the classic vacation destination for folks who want to experience the biggest and best of the great outdoors. Many Montana campgrounds and Montana RV campground resorts offer packages including a total big country experience, so call ahead to find out.

Near the northwest Montana town of West Glacier is a 1,000,000-acre expanse of Rocky Mountains, frosty lakes, cedar forests, alpine meadows and waterfalls. Glacier National Park is an intensely rugged land sculpted by ancient rivers of ice. The 50 glaciers that inspired the park’s name are vast accumulations of ice and snow that continually advance through the mountains, even today reshaping the countryside as they progress through time and space. Glacier National Park is a designated Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site. Together with Canada’s Waterton Lakes National Park, it’s officially titled Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. One essential park experience is the Going-to-the-Sun Road, a 52-mile east to west auto route that winds past lakeshores, wildflower fields and the Continental Divide. (RVers should note that vehicle size restrictions apply on portions of this thoroughfare.) For travelers who prefer open-air tours, Glacier serves up more than 700 miles of trails for horses, bikes, and hikers; streams for fishing; and excellent locations for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

Also found in the northwest near Moiese, the National Bison Range is a federal wildlife refuge managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. A large variety of habitats are represented in this preserve, including wetlands, forests, streams and the predominant grassy Palouse Prairie. Part of the resident bison population freely roams the refuge while other bison are kept in enclosures where visitors can observe them closely. Bison bulls tip the scales at 2,000 pounds and they have shaggy brown bodies with heavy fur capes, big muscle humps on their backs, massive, woolly heads and thick horns. Females are half as large with smaller humps, smoother coats and thinner horns. When viewing bison, caution should always be exercised, especially with bulls or any cows accompanied by calves. The good news for avid wildlife watchers is that, in addition to the American bison herd that varies from 350 to 400 animals, the Bison Range shelters a number of other mammal species including coyotes, red fox, elk and black bears, plus birds such as hawks and meadowlarks. There are lots of great Montana campgrounds and Montana RV camping resorts around these parts, many of which are open year round.

In “Big Sky Country’s” north central region, among gold rush towns and wilderness areas, Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park is located 19 miles west of Three Forks. Montana’s original and most popular state park highlights Mother Nature’s geologic prowess – the stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, and columns of one of the region’s most celebrated limestone cave systems. Rangers at Lewis and Clark guide visitors through seasonal, two-mile-long adventures “down under” where they talk about the history, geology and ecology of the park’s caverns. Up above ground by the light of day, the park entertains guests with hiking trails, a fishing stream, picnic areas and an inviting natural neighbor – the Jefferson River.

Located in south central Montana, northwest Wyoming and east Idaho, Yellowstone National Park is the world’s first, and oldest, national park. This highly acclaimed International Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site contains tangible evidence of one of the earth’s major active volcanoes. The familiar landmark Old Faithful and the park’s 10,000 other geysers and hot springs are the fascinating cornerstones of the Yellowstone adventure. And there’s so much more to see and do all year long. Canyons, cliffs, mountains, valleys, lakes, waterfalls and wildflowers decorate Yellowstone’s 2.2 million acres. Antelope, trumpeter swans, elk, otters and eagles also share the wonders of Yellowstone National Park.

Fort Peck Lake Reservoir and Recreation Area is located on northeast Montana’s Missouri River near the town of Fort Peck. Boaters and anglers can’t lose at Fort Peck Lake, the state’s principal waterway. It’s a 134-mile-long lake with a maximum depth of 220 feet and 1,600 scenic miles of shoreline. As a swimming hole that accommodates 50 species of fish, Fort Peck Lake delivers crowd-pleasing catches like walleye, Chinook salmon, northern pike and smallmouth bass. And here’s another nice recreational bonus – Fort Peck’s reservoir is surrounded by the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge, a 1,000,000-acre haven that’s made to order for hiking, fishing and hunting.

Getting Lodge Decor

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

I don’t know about you, but I have always loved rustic home décor. There is that warm, comfortable atmosphere it gives that just relaxes you and makes you feel contented and at home. A lot of friends I know are starting to redecorate their homes to give it that rustic look, even if they’re in the middle of cosmopolitan California. They told me this all started after they’ve enjoyed a vacation at a hunting lodge, and something about the coziness of its decorations and the uniqueness of the accessories appealed to their inner countryman.

If you also want to redecorate your home by giving it that lodge décor theme, you can easily do so. And, like my friends, it doesn’t matter if you’re living in Montana or in New York. All you need is your creativity and some proper furniture and accessories, and you’ll have your very own lodge or country house sitting in the middle of the metropolis. Rustic in the old days used to mean “rickety and cheap”, but believe me, that sort of thinking is now gone. Rustic décor now teeters on the brink of being called sophisticated and trendy.

How to go about it? First, change your windows, your flooring, and your wall art. Windows are very important at changing the overall look and feel of a home. Try using canvas or cotton with tabbed tops, or a print fabric curtain. You can also use plain wooden blinds. And avoid getting those frilly, lacy curtains or valances. These will ruin the whole rustic lodge theme that you’re trying to achieve. Do throw in a few wildlife rugs for good measure.

What you put on your walls will also play a major role in changing the appearance and ambiance of your home. Colors are critical here. Get some earth tones for your paint or wallpaper on the double. Pastels, of course, are out of the questions. If you can, use split logs and chinking for a log cabin look, or just go with paint. Don’t forget wall art and accessories. They make even the most unsightly walls look good and add a vital touch to the overall effect of your décor. Find and use hunting prints, or even old dusty advertising signs, and stick them on the walls. They will give your home that additional campy atmosphere.

With regards to rustic furniture, you don’t have to go all out by filling your house with them. Adding a few pieces here and there will be enough; this will also make them stand out better. Add a few cushions or pillows to your seating furniture. Aside from giving them an additional level of comfort, it will serve as the element that connects the rustic pieces with the other furnishings in a room. As for matching the furniture with the lighting, it’s really not that important. Just include a variety of choice pieces, like a pinecone chandelier or a tree table lamp.

Accessories are essential in putting together the whole rustic décor theme. Be sure to select colors and designs that will match the look you want to achieve. Get some wooden bowls, bear napkin holders, and pinecone placemats for the kitchen. For the garden and patio, accents such as arbors, trellises, wooden chairs and benches work well in providing that campy feeling. Coat racks, mirrors, blankets and metal art can also be used in living rooms, powder rooms, and even bedrooms. And don’t forget the ubiquitous wall mounts, which can give your home that final, rustic touch.

You don’t have to live in a log cabin or a hunting lodge to enjoy the casual, comfortable atmosphere of rustic décor and furnishings. With the right furnishings and your creativity, you’ll achieve that homey look and charming appeal, whether you’re in a city apartment or in a country house.

North Dakota Hunting – What to Expect on Your Trip to North Dakota

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

What is it about North Dakota hunting that draws so many people? They offer a large variety of small game to hunt, there’s no question about that.

Obviously, they don’t compare with states such as Montana, Wyoming, or Alaska in terms of hunting larger game like elk, bear, etc, but they do have a lot of smaller game.

Also, it offers some spectacular scenery, as much of the state of North Dakota is uninhabited, and therefore there are many locations you can really feel like it’s just you and the woods.

What kind of game can you expect to find with North Dakota Hunting? Quite simply, you can find smaller game, such as birds, duck, geese, rabbit, turkey, and larger game, like deer, mountain lions, foxes, etc.

Therefore, you can still find larger game if that’s your ambition, and really no matter how skilled you are at hunting, you will be challenging here.

Obviously, this brings up the next question. Since North Dakota is such a big state, how do you know the best place to hunt there? Its’ quite simple: you don’t. You will need t test out several places at least before you find the best one, and there’s no getting around this process.

The more popular places that are listed online are usually the ones that will be most frequented by hunters, and therefore you will have a lot of competition when it comes to finding the right game. Often times, another hunter will get them before you do. Therefore, sometimes the best places are the ones that nobody knows about, just like fishing.

First of all, if you want to get a hunting license in the state, you can do so right over the internet, as just about every state offers this option nowadays. The days of having to high tail it over to the local hunting store or courthouse are over, although you will still need this option, of course, if you don’t have internet access.

Also, this might be the best way if you want it immediately, and can’t way to have it shipped to you, as it will generally take around a week or more online. You can also do so by telephone and get it immediately.

If you are new to the state, I’d recommend you get yourself a north Dakota hunting guide, as they will be able to bring you to the best locations so that you can spend more time hunting and less time trying to find the animals in the first place.

If you are more adventurous (and cheap) attempt to find the best spot yourself, but of course, this could take the majority of your trip, and if time constraint is an issue, than hiring a guide is probably your best bet.

If you are serious about having a successful hunt and getting a catch on this trip, I’d highly recommend you make the investment, as you won’t regret it. A North Dakota hunting trip is definitely something you should do if you want nice scenery, and a chance to go after just about any kind of animal you want on your trip.
