Different Types of Ammunition

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

There are many different types of ammunition and sometimes selecting the right ones can be extremely difficult. Usually the design and style of the ammunition will determine the purpose for different situations. In this article, we will discuss a few different types of ammunition and uses for them and also the reasons they can benefit you on specific jobs or hunts.

Handguns are sometimes used for hunting, but are mostly used for recreation and personal protection. Handguns are an extremely effective tool for self protection, but choosing the right ammunition is just as important as choosing the actual handgun. Defensive ammunition is designed to expand within the target rather than going all the way through the target.

Hollow points are the most commonly used defensive ammunition on the market. When fired, the pressure created in the hollowed tip when penetrating the target forces the tip to expand outwards typically resembling a mushroom. The advantage of the hollow point over other ammunition is the decreased penetration of the target for the safety of others around you. If firing rounds off in your home or apartment with other family members in the next room, penetration is a concern as it could easily travel through walls, potentially injuring your loved ones. Hollow point ammunition is safer for all parties concerned including your attacker as he is more likely to go down from one or two rounds of hollow point than six or seven rounds of other types of ammunition.

Frangible ammunition, a lot like hollow points, are also extremely effective self defense ammunition; they have the same hollowed end but are filled with tiny metal beads and covered by a polymer end cap. They are designed to break apart when they hit walls or hard surfaces preventing ricochets during close quarter combat.

FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) ammunition doesn’t expand and is made to penetrate, making this a bad choice for use as self defense ammunition. FMJ are used often by the military mostly because they hardly ever jam up making them a more reliable choice.

Shotgun ammunition has basic types of loads: buckshot, birdshot, and slug loads and are used most commonly today for sport shooting and hunting small and big game animals. The choice of caliber depends on the type of situation the firearm is being used for. Shotguns have various different uses; law enforcement officials and military personnel use them for self protection and long range shooting, sport shooters use them for clay and target shooting, and of course they are used for hunting lots of different sized animals such as bear, elk, deer, prairie dogs, rabbits, turkey, and many other types of game.

Buckshot is loaded with large diameter lead balls used for large game hunting and self defense. It is also used in riot and combat situations by police and military because this load has a lot of stopping power. Birdshot is loaded with smaller diameter pellets and is mostly used for hunting game birds. Shot size is selected not only for distance, but for game being hunted as the shot must reach the target with enough force to penetrate and kill the animal. Lead shot is the cheapest, but environmental restrictions have more hunters turning to steel shot.  Stopping power is poor with steel shot and it is only recommended for personal defense in the home. Slug shots are a solid lead shell with enormous stopping power and rifle-like performance, by firing one large projectile rather than many smaller ones. Unlike the other loads, the slug loads must be aimed like a rifle or handgun; this load ruins the shotgun’s major benefit of superior hit probability. This load is also used in law enforcement and military as a reasonable substitute for a rifle when the targets are at medium ranges.

When selecting ammunition, try to keep in mind these useful tips; American-made is the best. Stay away from foreign-made ammunition and hand loads; use manufacturer-loaded cartridges only. Here are some examples of name brand ammunition that we recommend: Federal ammunition, Cor-Bon ammunition, Hornady, Remington ammunition, Winchester or CCI ammunition.

The most common question that gets asked is: What type of ammunition to use? If you find yourself asking this question a lot, there are some different ways to find this information rather than asking someone at your local gun shop and later finding out that he has no idea what he’s talking about. Do some research on your own and find out what is best suited for your shooting needs. This is best way to find out which types of ammunition will work best for you.

Your 2008 Job Search Checklist

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

The days of simply browsing through the Sunday newspaper and sending out a few resumes in order to win your next career opportunity are over. The days of retiring after having worked for just one or two companies are also over. Downsizings, mergers, offshoring, acquisitions, corporate reorganizations, consolidation, and other change initiatives have required rapid adaptation of workers, hard career decisions, and frequent transitions. These days, the average worker will hold approximately ten jobs before the age of 36. The average worker will change careers several times during his or her lifetime.

While the timeframe for your job search will vary with the specifics of your situation, a commonly cited statistic is that the average job search will take anywhere from three to six months from initiation to the day you begin your new job. The U.S. Department of Labor indicates that the average length of unemployment in the U.S. is currently 18 weeks (a little over four months), but this figure covers all professions, all industries, and all professional levels. Another common job search statistic tells us that you can expect to spend approximately one month job searching for each $10,000 in salary you are seeking.

Do you have a job search planned in 2008? If you do, and if you are looking forward to your next job search with dread, you are definitely not alone! Job searching can be incredibly stressful. But, with some planning, genuine effort, and sincere commitment, you can minimize that stress and land a new job – one that is personally, professionally, and financially rewarding – faster than you may have thought possible.

Here is a checklist to help you achieve a fast, successful job search in 2008.

_____ Set a clear target. Put yourself in the driver’s seat of your career by clearly defining your job search focus. In general, the more precise and focused your job search is, the better. For most people, the best and strongest job targets will include a statement of the job function and professional level paired with other indicators, sometimes just one and sometimes more than one, to make the job target more precise and ultimately more effective. These other indicators may be criteria such as industry, company size, company culture, or geographic location.

_____ Build your network of support. Don’t underestimate the importance of having a strong support network to offer encouragement and advice, to brainstorm and share ideas with you, to help keep you accountable to the goals you set for yourself, and to help keep you on track throughout the emotional roller coaster that a job search can be. Family and friends are often included in the support network, but also consider joining a job search group or working with a career coach, particularly one who is very familiar with job search mechanics.

_____ Adjust your attitude. An enthusiastic, “can-do” attitude that exudes self-confidence and a clear understanding of the value you offer in the workplace will make all the difference. Always put a smile on your face when you talk on the phone; it will shine through in your voice. Make eye contact and watch your body signals and posture when you meet with contacts in person. Your positive, confident attitude is one that people will like to be around and will make it more likely that you will be hired.

_____ Update and revive your resume. Your resume is your first introduction to employers. Don’t underestimate the importance of making a positive first impression with it! Your resume should be up-to-date, focused for the current search, employer-centered, and results-oriented. YOU are a commodity in the job market and your resume is your advertisement. If your resume needs refreshing, now is the time to do it. If you need help with your resume, you should definitely consider hiring a professional resume writer.

_____ Cultivate and strengthen your professional network. With more than 80% of available jobs never advertised, it is essential that you have the ability to access the hidden job market. Your professional network will be one of your most effective sources for information and referrals relating to the hidden job market. Of course, networking is all about relationships and so you should continuously nurture your network relationships regardless of whether you are job searching or not. But, whether you have or haven’t (If you haven’t, building network relationships would make a great New Year’s Resolution), now is the time to reach out to everyone you know to inform them of your search and to ask for advice and referrals. Consider using a website like LinkedIn to help with your effort.

_____ Establish and promote your personal branding. At its essence, personal branding is about the authentic and unique promise of value you offer. In relation to your career, it is about the promise of value you offer that differentiates you from your peers and competitors in the workplace and job market. Branding yourself can actually have such a dramatic effect that you will become hunted rather than being the hunter for your next job opportunity.

_____ Get organized and create a system for managing your job search. An organized plan and system will help keep you motivated, moving forward, and focused on achieving the ultimate goal. At the very least, you need a calendaring system, a system of logging inter-related and follow-up activities, a contact management system, and a filing system.

_____ Create and follow a written, multi-pronged job search plan. Answering ads or posting your resume on the Internet are the easiest, but usually least effective job search techniques. Your job search plan should include a balance of techniques to access both the published and unpublished job market. Further, it should include activities prioritized and strategically selected to fit in each of the five major job search approaches: 1) Networking and referral building; 2) Targeting and contacting employers; 3) Working with recruiters and agencies; 4) Internet job searching (which also has some overlap with the 5th technique); 5) Answering advertisements.

What Other Jobs Can Hunting Dogs Do?

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

What other things can hunting dogs do?

Hunting dogs are versatile, intelligent animals. Their size and ability to learn makes them ideal for many tasks that help humans with daily life.

Service dog training helps the disabled

Therapy dog training helps people in hospitals, nursing homes and schools

Rescue dog training helps those trapped and injured

Seeing eye dog training helps the blind

Hearing dog training helps the deaf

Assistance dog training helps the disabled and those with medical needs

What is service dog training?

Many of the sporting breeds are used for service dog training. A service dog is generally an assistance dog who is trained to help people with a disability other than visual or hearing impairment, or a medical response.

Many private organizations raise service dogs with the help of prison inmates or families as puppy-raisers. Puppies learn obedience and basic life skills (socialization) until they are old enough for specific training. Other people train their own dogs at home.

In the U.S. the disabled and their service dogs are protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) which gives them equal access to anywhere the general public is allowed, such as restaurants, taxis, and aircraft, as well as provides protection for handlers living in places “pets” are generally not allowed.

Canine Companions for Independence is one organization that helps people in need of service dogs. They primarily use Golden Retrievers and Labradors for service dog training.

What is therapy dog training?

Hunting dogs also excel at therapy dog training. Therapy dogs visit nursing home residents, people in hospitals, and children in schools. They are used for emotional support and for educational purposes.

Therapy dogs cheer and comfort people. Therapy dogs usually need to be certified before some places will accept them. Therapy Dogs International, Inc., and the Delta Society are two well-known therapy dog groups.

What is rescue dog training?

The sporting breeds can also be superb when it comes to rescue dog training. Many of the best search and rescue dogs are sporting breeds. The same good nose and sensitivity that works in the field can be put to good use when it comes to finding a missing person or a missing pet. Some of the SAR dogs used following 9/11 were sporting breeds.

What is seeing eye dog training?

People everywhere identify Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers as preeminent seeing eye dogs. Guide Dogs for the Blind base their breeding program on Labs and Goldens, with a small number of Lab/Golden crosses because these breeds excel at their tasks and have the specific qualities needed for seeing eye dog training.

What is hearing dog training?

Hunting dogs also make good hearing dogs for the deaf and hard of hearing. With hearing dog training these dogs alert their owners to a variety of household sounds such as a door knock or doorbell, alarm clock, oven buzzer, telephone, baby cry, name call or smoke alarm. Dogs are trained to make physical contact and lead their deaf partners to the source of the sound.

Any breed can be trained to be a hearing dog as they are generally small to medium in size. Hearing dogs are identified by an orange collar and leash and/or vest. NEADS (Dogs for Deaf and Disabled Americans) is the oldest continuing hearing dog program in the country.

What is assistance dog training?

Assistance dog training covers dogs with service dog training, hearing dog training, and seeing eye dogs. Some dogs can even be taught to recognize the signs of an impending illness, such as an asthma attack, epilepsy or a diabetic emergency.

Many dogs perform lifesaving actions by alerting their owners or other family members to a medical emergency. Sporting dogs, with their sensitivity and their intelligence, have frequently saved lives with their service dog training.

Lizzie Novotny R.N has a researched and informative website about dogs, especially the sporting dog breeds. She raises, trains and shows dogs and horses, and is familiar with all aspects of their care. Find answers to your dog-related questions by visiting her website The Hunting Dog

Best Selling Film DVDs Of 2007

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

The invasion of DVDs has made people go ‘gaga’ over the quality of home entertainment. Producers and distributors of the films that were earlier printed on CD, now have gone on to put their films on DVD and Blu-ray disks. All the best selling film DVDs of 2007 have come out to be a huge hit all over the world.

One of the favorite jobs of the movie buffs, is to know the hit list that has topped the market both commercially and popularly. One of the main indexes of a popular film is that it has to be commercially successful. If the film were economically viable, it would also be a hit in the box office. Nowadays, the spread of mass media in every form of entertainment has provided some cost cushion for the distributors. Almost all the best selling film DVDs of 2007 have fallen under this headrest.

Now, the distributors are not limited to getting their revenues from the ticket selling only. There are DVD and CD packaging, overseas marketing, selling of Audio rights, and online film viewing. A trailer on the Internet publicizes the film quite a lot in the pre release market. There are other promotional activities also.

A film like “Transformers”, which topped the chart in both rental, and Box office is also a hit in the toy market. It has been in one of the best selling film DVDs of 2007. There have been all sorts of Transformers merchandise; toys, caps, t-shirts, guns, window valance, poster, comforter, party mask, lunch plates, communicator, monopoly games and everything.

‘Transformers’ is a retro cartoon, which became an instant hit when it came on to strike the big screen in 2007 as a live action film. In 1986, The Transformers, the Movie was the first full length film based on the cartoon series. The story of Transformers goes like this; it is the fight between two robotic clans. One is the good Autobots another is the evil Deceptions. The two giant robotic clans posed a great threat to earth. It was left for the hero, a teenage boy two save the day.

One of the best selling film DVDs of 2007 was” Chicago”. It was a huge success both on DVD and the rental chart. Not only the sales were on high but it also was listed on the Top 10 chart some time or the other.

‘The Hunted’, ‘Finding Nemo’, ‘The Matrix Reloaded’, ‘Bourne Ultimatum’, ‘The Lord of the Rings-The Two Towers’, ‘Stitch, the Movie’, ‘Live Free or Die Hard,’ ‘Shrek the Third’, ‘Ocean’s Thirteen’, ‘Spiderman 3′, ‘Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer’ and ‘Ratatouille’ are some of the hits of 2007.

All the above-mentioned films have made good business in box office, which propelled the success story in DVD market also. One of the problems with film DVD selling is piracy. Film pirates are now ripping off DVDs to an Xvid rip of 700 MB and distributing over the Internet for free.

Rippers target the current year released films. For example, Scene releasers would take on the best selling film DVDs of 2007, and rip them to high quality AVI, MP4 or MKV files.

The size of a single channel DVD is around 4.7 GB. The average data rate is around 8 MBit/s for the video. However, when the film is ripped in compression Codecs like Xvid, DivX or x264 the quality is reduced by mere 20%, with file size coming down under 1.5 GB. This is acceptable for all the downloaders who are getting to see old and new releases in awesome quality without having to pay any money at all.

Adventure Travel Tour Guiding Among Best Summer Jobs

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Adventure travel companies are similar to land tour companies. Guides give guests the time of their lives while they are in Alaska for vacation. Seasonal work with adventure companies is available for people wanting to see the country from a slightly different angle.

College students and other adventure seekers can come to Alaska and work their way across the country. Adventure travel is popular for those people that are looking for a more active type of vacation. Guests no longer want to sit on the sidelines and just observe the happenings. They want to get involved. This is where adventure touring comes into play.

Adventure tours allow guests to view the unspoiled nature of Alaska. They can take a wildlife excursion to view Alaskan bears, caribou, moose, and Dall sheep. Seeing the land from a zipline is breathtaking and fun for the younger visitors to Alaska.

Some adventure travel is associated with wilderness lodges. Guides lead guests on bicycle tours, hiking trips, and river rafting tours. A guide needs to be able to troubleshoot problems with equipment and medical situations during the adventure. You may be called on to take fishermen out for a day on the lake or guide a hunting party.

Adventure travel companies lead all sorts of tours. Eco-friendly tours are conducted to national parks and preserves in Alaska. These tours allow guests to see the country but are more for learning about nature and its components. Tours are conducted on land and along bodies of water.

Adventure travel jobs are varied. Workers can choose from several guide positions: jeep guides, nature guides, kayak guides, white water rafting guides, bus escort, bus driver, canoe guides, bicycle leader, backpacking guide, fishing guides, rock climbing, walking guides, and wildlife jobs. Depending on where you work in Alaska, you could be a skiing guide.

Travel companies also need to fill office positions within the company. Tours have to be organized and the logistics of travel worked out before guests arrive for their adventure. People in these support positions work hard to see that the jobs of the others are a bit less hectic. These positions include bookkeepers, administrative assistants, and booking agents. Adventure companies associated with lodges need administrative help at the sites. These positions give seasonal workers a chance to see Alaska as well.

Room and board are provided by the adventure travel company for their workers. Toru guides travel with the guests from place to place. Guides associated with adventure lodges are housed in staff quarters and provided with gourmet meals like those enjoyed by the guests. Workers can also use the facilities available to guests and enjoy adventures as a perk of their employment.

When applying for job openings with an adventure travel company, play to your strengths if you can. Any experience that you have in a particular area, say fishing, white water rafting, and mountain biking, will help to acquire a guide job with an adventure company. This is not a requirement but it helps.

Let’s look at a job as a canopy guide for example. The position requires that guides lead guests through the zip course. They are responsible for the safety and training of the guests while they are in their care. Guides also keep up with inspections of the equipment used and the course followed.

It sounds like a lot, but most employers are willing to train guides for the job. Generally, they are looking for people who are outgoing, possessing customer service skills, and are willing to work hard. Many tour guide training programs are punctuated by skills assessments and tests before the worker is allowed to guide a group. Interviews allow employers to size up workers to see if they possess the skills to make it in a position with the company.

Sometimes certifications are needed for various positions. You can learn this ahead of time by studying job descriptions. If you have narrowed down the position you want, take steps to fulfill the certification requirements after you apply for the job. This shows how serious you are about working and will impress the employer during an interview.

Job seekers looking for unforgettable and rewarding summer jobs should explore working in Alaska. Many adventure travel companies, cruise lines, and other businesses in the tourism field need to fill tour guide jobs in national parks and seaside towns. Learn about the best seasonal employment on SummerJobFinder.com.

Job Hunting Site

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Those who graduate from college are among the thousands of people who are looking for work. This doesn’t yet include those who have quit the current jobs or have been laid off due to budget cuts so the competition is tough.

Many applicants will look for work by sifting through the classified ads in the newspaper. Most companies use the Internet nowadays because it reaches a larger market. The firm can make a tie up with a job site or decide to put ads on the official website.

The person can become a member for free or pay a certain fee. Members can get alerts if there is a job out there that matches one’s work experience. These may come in daily or weekly via the phone or through email.

Those who want to respond to the matches can immediately send the resume to the potential company. It will also be a good idea to add a cover letter to make the application very formal.

Some sites even give the individual the option to let recruiters view one’s resume. After the applicant has applied for a certain job, there is a status section so that the person will know if the recruiter has reviewed this or it has been rejected.

The applicant can use the major search engines to be able to find these job sites. It will be a good idea to be a member of at least two or three to get a lot of exposure.

Most job sites will require the person to fill some personal details. It is only after this has been completed that the newbie can upload the resume. The member also has the option to put a pic in the website so that recruiters will have an idea how the applicant looks like.

There is another kind of job hunting site that could be very useful. This is called a blast resume wherein an attachment of the applicant’s application is sent randomly to various companies in the hopes of getting interviewed for a job.

Is it effective? Some people say yes while others do not agree. This is because it sometimes reaches the wrong companies and no one with those types of qualification are needed in the workforce.

Of course, the end justifies the means. So, those who are still looking for work should use whatever resources there are to land a job and get paid for doing something that the person is good at.

To date, there are more than 10 job sites that people can view in the Internet. Is there one site that does the better over the others? The answer is no because some specialize in a certain field while others have a broad base which caters to workers from different fields.

Some of these job sites offer opportunities in other states or countries. Those who are thinking of moving somewhere else to start over can check these out and then send an application.

The applicant should be aware that there are other people who may be more or under qualified vying for the same position. The person should just hope that the credentials one has is sufficient enough to the company’s standards to be able to get the job.

If the company doesn’t call back, the only thing anyone can do is wait for a call from another recruiter.
