Bow Hunting Equipment – Choosing Between Sights And Scopes!
Friday, July 16th, 2010After purchasing a bow, the next item on a hunter’s list will probably be sights. There are a lot of different options available for the hunter and it’s important to understand what they’re used for, how they work, and the best option for each type of hunting.
The first thing to consider when buying a sight is how you will be using your bow. If you plan only to target shoot, scopes have greater accuracy and will probably be the better option. If you only plan to hunt game though, there is little need for a scope at all. Another variable to consider when choosing sights is the location of your hunt. Will you be hunting from a blind? Up high from a tree stand? Or from a moving vehicle such as a boat? Make sure to do your research to find what type of sight will fit your situation best.
Many target shooters prefer movable single pin sights such as sure-loc sights to put on their bow. These type of sights allow the hunter the precision of setting a specific shooting distance in yards; the hunter sets the dial and shoots. Similarly, if the hunter is using a hunting sight and pin that is set only for even numbers and the target is 23 yards away, the pin should be set for 20 yards and the hunter should aim high. Many hunters choose to add a scope to this type of sight to help, but this is up to the preference of the hunter.
Many ranges have now moved to the indoors. To acommodate, many hunters have adjusted their gear to reflect the environment. Many hunters using these indoor targets use a 6x or 8x magnified scope for indoor 300 courses, and 3x to 8x for Fita and Field shooters, and a 3x or 4x magnified for 3D. With new technology, many scopes have gone high-tech with the newest options available to the bow hunter. All scopes have an aiming dot, but some use fiber optics like bow hunting sights; others have stick on dots, or stick on rings. All the options perform well, and the decision is left up to what each individual hunter prefers. With this basic knowledge, a hunter can go into his local archery shop and peruse all the options, try the different types of equipment, and make the best decision for him.

Turkey Hunting Explained – 4 Sure Ways To Grab A Turkey
Sunday, May 2nd, 2010For those hunters with a passion for the challenge, turkey hunting is a great sport to take up. Because the bird’s have such a keen sense of hearing and eyesight, they are often considered the most challenging quarry. It’s imperative for the hunter to be as absolutely still as he can be, making as little noise as he can. With a few tips in mind though, he can have a great time hunting this clever bird.
1. Find out where the turkeys are. It’s advisable to any hunter to get out into the woods and study the habits of his target. Many turkey hunters head to where the turkeys are in their area and observe them and practice their calls. If a hunter isn’t sure where turkeys have been, asking neighbors or even the professional at his local sports shop can give him tips. Turkeys also leave plenty of signs of their presence; and finding where they roost can be very valuable knowledge come turkey season.
2. Stake out your spot. It’s important that the hunter not only know where he’ll be taking cover come open season, but that he go and prepare the area. Using a hunting blind is always the best way to ensure that you’re fully concealed from the birds, but using natural vegetation or stumps can also do the job.
3. Call the birds in. Turkey calls can be a tricky instrument to master, but when perfection is achieved, they can be an invaluable resource. There are a variety of different calls on the market, from those that mimic hens or males, and many at least come with an instruction booklet, if not audio clips to help the hunter practice. When the hunter does take to the woods with his call though, it’s important he not start out too aggressive; this can turn many birds away.
4. Camouflage yourself. Being able to blend into the natural surroundings of the area will become essential for any turkey hunt. Even so much as getting camouflaged arrows or a gun stock can be the difference between bringing home a trophy and going home disappointed. It’s also important if using a blind to find one that not only blends in, but also that isn’t too loud.
It’s also important for the turkey hunter to know that he may not bring home a gobbler with every trip. Many hunters enjoy the hunt just as much as the reward that can come with it.
