The Free Market Farm Subsidy: How to Let Your Land Make You Money

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Farm subsidies began in 1933 as part of FDR’s Agricultural Adjustment Act. However, well before and long after farmers, ranchers, and landowners have often asked: How can my land make money? Creative utilization of assets of any nature have longed served to make individuals extra money. With an asset like farm or ranch land, there exists many opportunities for farmers and ranchers to let their land make money.

Several considerations should be made by farmers, ranchers, and landowners when they initially put in place the practical steps needed to have the question “how can my land make money?” move from the abstract, to a steady stream of income. The size, location, current use, potential use, and accessibility of the land are all important considerations. In addition, the goals of the landowner will also dictate the manner in which land is used to make money. Popular alternatives that are relatively “hands off” for the landowner include allowing individuals to hunt, fish, or camp on the property. Some hunting leases for big game animals bring in thousands of dollars over a relatively short period of time. Other hunting leases, such as those for goose hunting, bring in less on a per hunt basis but are more manageable and provide a steady source of money over a longer period of time. Similar to hunting, if the property has water fixtures suitable for fishing, selling per day or per week authorization to fish provides another way landowners can let their land make them money. Finally, there are a number of outdoor enthusiasts who love to camp but shun the idea of being constrained by the boundaries of a public campsite. If the land in question is suitable for camping, landowners can market these attributes as well.

Hunting, camping, and fishing are not the only ways landowners can find an answer to the question, “how can my land make money?” Not all land is ideally suited for the aforementioned activities. Notwithstanding, there are other opportunities to make money from land. Heavily treed areas can be thinned and the wood cut can be sold. If the property is good for grazing or pasturing animals, arrangements can be made with ranchers in need of such land. Instances of this nature provide landowners an opportunity to barter or trade which may provide some tax advantages depending upon the size and scope of the arrangement. Even if the property appears to be good for very little, do not discount the notion that it may be able to make extra money. Perhaps a cellular service tower or other fixture could be placed on the property. An arrangement of this nature could provide anything from a steady stream of income to free cellular phone service, or both.

In short, there exist numerous ways and opportunities for farmers, ranchers, and landowners to realize a tangible monetary answer to the question, “how can my land make money?” Regardless of the size, shape, or current use of the land in question, a creative outlook will certainly help segue the abstract question to an answer that is money in the bank.

How To Gut A Deer Video – Choosing the Right Hunting Knife

How To Gut A Deer Video

Before you settle on that new hunting knife, there are a few things you should consider. What animals will you hunt? How will you dress and butcher the animal? Do you plan to have a mount made? How do you want to carry the knife and is size or weight a factor? All these things may not seem important at first glance, but get into the elk woods with a knife poorly suited to skinning, caping or deboning and they suddenly become apparent.

Small game and upland birds are often easily handled with the average pocket knife. There are, however, knives specifically designed for small game. Big game like deer, elk, bear, moose and caribou are just that … BIG game. As the size and weight of the animal increase, the toughness of the hide increases. Body size and weight are decidedly an issue if you need to quarter or debone the animal to get it home or to a meat processor. That pocket knife you use on rabbits or quail might get the job done on a bear, but it isn’t going to be easy or pleasant. Neither is field dressing a cottontail with a large, fixed-blade sheath knife. How To Gut A Deer Video

Let’s look at the basic tasks we ask our knives to do

We’ll stick with big game. After the kill, your first consideration will likely be field dressing or gutting. Any experienced hunter knows that, right? But is there a particular type knife that is better at gutting than some other? Can’t you gut a deer or an elk with the same knife you’ll use to skin it? Sure you can, but …

Consider that a dedicated gut hook, or a knife with a built-in gut hook, will do a neater, cleaner job of field dressing than a skinning knife will, just as a skinning knife will skin that elk easier and more efficiently than a deboning knife ever could. And speaking of deboning … try it with a dedicated gut hook sometime. And what if that elk you just shot is your “Trophy of a Lifetime”? You want a mount, don’t you? At least a full head or a shoulder mount, huh? That means somebody will have to cape that elk properly so your taxidermist will have something to work with besides a ragged hide full of nicks and holes. A caping knife is in order.

The point here is that there are different type knives for different tasks. The right tool for the job, as the saying goes.

Now let’s compare the types mentioned so far

Dedicated gut hooks

This knife (for our purposes we’ll call it a knife) really has only one intended purpose … to cut open the belly, or paunch, WITHOUT cutting into the entrails and making a huge, stinking, contaminating mess. The dull tip does not nick the gut as the inverted “U”-shaped cutting edge zips open the belly slick as a whistle! Kind of like one of those fancy letter openers. It’s not much good for anything else, although I suppose it could pass as a pencil sharpener in a pinch. How To Gut A Deer Video

Mule Deer Shed Hunting Tips – Is It Enough For Deer?

Mule Deer Shed Hunting Tips

The 243 Winchester has been around for a long time. The .243 Winchester is a necked down 308 round and it inherits the overall good accuracy from the 308.

Bullets from 55 grains all the way up to 115 grain Match bullets are available for the 243. The most popular would be the 60 to 85 grain bullets designed for Varmints and the 95 to 105 grain bullets designed for Big Game.

The controversy over whether or not the 243 Winchester is an adequate round for Deer has been an ongoing one since the round was first introduced. Honestly, I don’t expect to settle it here, I’mh just hoping to shed some light on the round and what it is, and is not, capable of.

In the right hands, the 243 is well capable of taking Deer sized game in the the right hands.

In years past, many problems were encountered with the bullets used. Truth be known, te bullets made for the 243 have caused more problems for the round than the power of the cartridge itself.

The problem existed (and exist to a certain extent even today) with the erratic performance of early bullets. There were many stories around about bullets not expanding as they passed through game animals and many problems with the bullets blowing up on impact. Sometimes a hunter would have this problem with the same bullets from the same box of ammo! Mule Deer Shed Hunting Tips

Technology has brought the 243 Winchester a long ways. Cores are bonded to jackets better and the overall performance of the little 24 caliber bullets has risen over the years.

Still, this round is not a beginners rifle. A marginal hit from the 243 can leave wounded game in the field. The 243 Winchester really shines in the hands of a competent rifleman or riflewoman. Many beginners lack the experience to control the “shakes” and wait patiently for the right time to place the first shot where it belongs.

For beginners, there are better light recoiling calibers available that should be considered. Rounds such as the 257 Roberts, 260 Remington and 7mm-08 Remington are all great Deer rounds. Not only that, they are light recoiling and do far more damage than the 243 in case of a marginal hit.

So before you run out and buy a beginning Deer hunter a 243 Winchester, stop and think and then move on up in caliber size. Let the new hunter get some experience under their belts before handing them this little Deer round. Mule Deer Shed Hunting Tips

Sika Deer Hunting In Virginia – The Craft of Deer Stalking

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

Sika Deer Hunting In Virginia

One of the most favourite big game hunting type of hunt would be deer stalking. This is also known to have other names such as deer hunting. This is actually one of the most popular kinds of hunting game that hunters have loved for ages. Sometimes hunters even go far places just to get into the adrenaline action.

However, the term deer stalking can have different meanings. For the American version, it is called deer hunting, in which hounds are usually used to hunt for deer and in the end shoot the deer down. However, in England, deer stalking refers to a different kind of activity. It usually pertains to the activity of stalking deer just to see their living status in the wild

The Craft Behind The Hunt

Using the term “stalking” would serve to denote the activity’s extreme wariness and stealth, which are usually needed when you approach a wild deer within their natural habitat. Hence, deer stalking is usually done with a gillie’s guidance. A gillie is someone you can regard as a resident expert. This practice is done both in the United States and Europe. Getting the help of a Gillie is important, especially if it’s your first time to do such kind of activity. Sika Deer Hunting In Virginia

Stalking As A Form Of Control

It is also considered as a form of control. Here what is being controlled would be the deer population. For stalking practices in Europe, population control of six deer species is aimed. These species would include: red deer, fallow deer, roe deer, Chinese water deer, muntjac, and sika deer. The first two are indigenous.

The Whole Idea Behind It All

The main idea why this kind of activity is done is to maintain equilibrium in nature. Doing so would involve keeping the deer population at a certain level. This level should be healthy and stable so that the whole species would not have a negative effect to nature. Harvesting 30% of the deer population has to be done every year in able to maintain this so-called healthy population level. If there is need for population reduction then females are to be targeted for culling. If there is no need for reduction, then only sick and injured ones are to be culled. Some Tips To Carry On

If you do decide to engage on deer stalking, one of the most important tip to remember is that approaching your deer is a very important step and factor that you should think about carefully. In general, the bedding or the place that which the deer considers to be “home” is the one you should target. However, you should be able to device a way that you can approach it with extreme caution. The unexpected path should also be considered if you do not want to scare your deer away.

Knowing where to find the bedding is also important. Although it may not be the same for all deer, there are certain places that are usually chosen as a bedding site. Low ridges are one of the favourites along with low lands near swamps, rivers and ponds.

One of the most common technique used to know which direction to go and stalk would be by following the direction of the wind. Do this by striking a match, putting out the fire and watching where the smoke goes. This would act like a deer stalking compass and points out which direction you should go and look. Crossbow Deer Hunting Videos – Crossbow Hunting Trend

Crossbow Deer Hunting Videos

Crossbow hunting is becoming more and more popular these days as many states are opening up to the idea of using crossbows for small and big game hunting. Many older folks are finding that they don’t have the strength they use to have hunting with a traditional/compound bow and are using crossbows to still enjoy the thrill of the hunt without losing any prestige out in the field.

Crossbows of today are being made with pin point accuracy and speed but still give the hunter a since of having to be a skilled hunter to take down ones prey. Many myths have surrounded the world of crossbow hunting such as “no skill is necessary to use a crossbow” and “only poachers use crossbows” both which are false. It’s not easy to make a quick kill without patience and skill in the field which most poachers have neither, Poachers favorite weapons of choice is high powered rifles and traps.

Poachers use these rifles to make a quick deadly kill as to not leave a large blood trail and to ensure a quick getaway. Traps are used in secluded places to usually trap the animal, shoot it then take their trophy. Crossbows and any type of bow and arrow for that matter are not a top choice for any poacher as too much skill is required. Crossbow Deer Hunting Videos

Crossbow hunting you need skill as it’s a powerful weapon and with any weapon you must practice before you expect greatness in the field. Like any weapon you must get to know it’s quirks, and adjust it to your needs. Once you’ve achieved a certain comfort level with your crossbow then you will have the confidence you need out in the field to ensure a successful hunt. Crossbows come with many different devices such as a crank/cocking device which allows you a stress free injury free pullback.

These devices make it easier for those whom may be elderly and don’t have the shoulder strength to pullback the stringer and allows someone with a handicap or a young adult to enjoy the world of archery while building confidence to be able to go out and enjoy a successful day in the field. Crank/Cocking devices also are a means of less movement in the field to ensure a peaceful relaxing steady focus point on your target without the hassle or the strength of a traditional/compound bow. Crossbow Deer Hunting Videos

Another great option to crossbow hunting is a crossbow stand which you can rest your crossbow on to ensure pin point accuracy the only draw back is you must move the stand in the exact direction you want to face and stay put but it does work great for a rest in between shots and keeps your crossbow level. Hunting blinds are wonderful for crossbow hunting especially if you are using decoys when turkey hunting or when boar hunting as pigs are super smart and can be super aggressive so it’s not a bad idea to use a blind to protect yourself against these beasts.

Now that many states are allowing crossbows during hunting seasons there has been more acceptance among hunters. Also helping to give the crossbow creditability is most old timers whom were against using one find themselves only able to use a crossbow if they still want to enjoy hunting. Due to it’s ever rising popularity hunters don’t have to be ashamed of being a crossbow hunter but can now hold their heads up with pride and show off their skills in the field.
