Hunting Laws & Regulations in America

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

In the sport of hunting a few things are involved, Ghillie Suit, rifles, wildlife, and ammo come into play. Hunting was around ten years ago, 50 years ago, 100 years ago and many centuries before that; and will probably occur a few hundreds year from today. In North America hunting predates Canada, Mexico and the United States combined. Though, today hunting has changed.

Native Americans retain their hunting rights and exempt from various state and federal laws. The case for ordinary Americans is different. They are governed by heavy regulation. As much as those regulations are to protect hunters, they are also put into place to protect endangered animal species.

Like with many laws in the United States, hunting laws and regulations differ from state-to-state. Different states will have very specific demands involving protected species, but will rarely limit the hunting of unprotected species. A term you may hear frequently in hunting is the term: Varmints. Varmints refers to unprotected non-game animals that are seen by many individuals as pests. Varmints pose a threat to farmers’ crops, other livestock, landscaping, infrastructure or even domesticated pets. As hunting varmints is seen as a means of controlling unwanted predatory animals, there will most likely be very little to no regulation governing these animals. Some varmints include numerous different types of rodents, coyotes, birds, foxes, cars and hogs.

Big Game Animals, which refers to animals like bighorn sheep, deer, reindeer, elks, bear, and moose.  Small Game Animals refers to squirrels and cottontail rabbits.  Furbearers Animals include two species of fox – the red fox and mink.  Predator Animals refer to cougars, which includes mountain lions and panthers as well as coyotes.  In the bird category, animals include upland bird, like grouses and pheasants, as well as waterfowl, which includes duck and geese.

Now you just can’t go and start shooting these animals, because before you go hunting you will need a hunting license. Getting a hunting license is not as easy as 1-2-3, as you may have thought. To qualify for a license you will usually be asked to complete a hunting safety course.  On top of test you will have to purchase tags for each animal you plan on hunting.  To control the amount of wildlife is kills tags are often limited, especially in areas where there are more hunters than there are quotas for animal species.

Hunting is not a silly game of shoot and capture. Hunting is a serious sport not to be taken lightly.

The Most Hunted Animal in North America

Monday, December 28th, 2009

The white tailed deer are the most hunted animal in North America. There are currently over twenty to twenty five million estimated deer in North America alone, and the species can be found in three areas. There are currently 38 species of the deer found in North, South, and Central America. These illusive animals have been targets of the best hunters for many generations. However, lately the sport has grown by leaps and bounds.

There are now organized hunts with prizes ranging into the thousands. Trophy deer hunting is now a sport rather than a survival tool. The hunters in today’s age rarely hunt for meat or food, but mostly for sport. The product line for this sport has much to offer. From guns to clothing and accessories, you can spend thousands and never have everything. Hunting techniques are also as varied as the hunters themselves.

Many hunters prefer to hunt from a stand, but some do still like the thrill of the foot chase. When it comes to stands, there are many types. Hunters can choose from a permanent stand, a hanging stand, or even a blind to hide in on the ground. Trophy deer hunting can be done using many methods. Some hunters will set up cameras in an area to see where the deer tend to roam. Then they will put out feed to keep the deer coming back.

Some hunters will hire a guide or outfitter service. A guide is someone who knows an area well and can show the places that the deer frequent. However, an outfitter company will provide everything you need, such as clothing and guns, then they will escort you on the hunt. Either service can be beneficial when trophy deer hunting. These services work with the most experienced hunters and even beginners with no experience.

There are also many trophy deer hunting seasons. Every year, a youth season will kick off the trophy deer hunting fun. Included will be a black powder and a rifle season. The next trophy deer hunting season is adult black powder. This season can be a lot of fun for the hunter who prefers to use old time guns and methods. Next comes the regular hunting season for adults. Each state will have its own dates and limitations. Usually the season is set based on the number of deer in an area. There will also be limits on how many bucks and does can be killed per hunter. Some states with a higher population of deer may allow for more deer or have two seasons.

The game and fish commission now regulates all hunting activities. They will require that you purchase a permit or license for trophy deer hunting. You will also have to buy a tag, and check in each deer you kill. These rules are put in place to track the numbers of deer being killed and to help maintain the population. They do not want the deer population to grow out of control, but at the same time must protect the species against any threat of extinction.

Albie Berk enjoys hunting and sharing what he has learned and any successful tips he can with others. He enjoys South Carolina hunting and usually stays at Island Plantation

Uruguay: The Best Bird Hunting In South America

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

For years now, Sportsmen from around the world have quietly converged on Uruguay to take advantage of excellent, but little known hunting opportunities. The country features an unbeatable mix of European hospitality, a temperate climate and excellent accommodations. Condor Outfitters has organized bird hunting tours to the country for years. The company has these insights to share about this exotic, but convenient South American bird hunting destination.

The available species make both ground and wing hunting exciting options for hunters. Hunters routinely report bagging hundreds of birds in a few hours, and often need help to load and bag fast enough to take advantage of the plentiful opportunities available to them.

Three bird species are commonly hunted in Uruguay. Each one presents a different challenge to hunters. They are:

Doves: Doves are plentiful in Uruguay. Huge flocks make regular trips to forage from sunflowers and other crops. They’re the choice for high volume hunting. Hunters routinely bag several hundred in s two or three hour period. Hunting doves actually helps Uruguayan farmers, too because their huge numbers pose a threat to crops.

Pigeons: Spot-Winged and Picazuro Pigeons are challenging targets due to their erratic movements and speeds. They rarely fly in flocks like the doves do, and are not as plentiful as doves.

Perdiz: Perdiz are part of the Tinamou family of ground feeders. This is a great species which lends itself to be hunted over bird dogs. Perdiz have been compared to quail but does not convey the unique aspects of both the bird itself and the hunting experience. Perdiz are a distinctly South American bird, and nothing quite like them can be found anywhere else.

The hunt itself is just one part of the experience. Uruguay is known for its excellent food and fantastic hospitality. The Uruguayan barbeque, or Asado, is a mandatory experience for anyone who really wants to experience the best that the country has to offer. As skilled cook (or asador) grills a fantastic variety of meat cuts and sausages. Uruguayan cooking also features regional variations on classic Mediterranean cuisine, due to the role of that region in the country’s colonial history. This is apparent in Italian inspired dishes, particularly deserts.

Uruguay’s old world heritage also manifests in the incredible hospitality a visitor can find there. Condor Outfitters sends its groups to a working ranch, but the level of service easily meets (and often exceeds) that of dedicated hunting lodges. Spacious accommodations are the rule, and a skilled staff guides hunters through every aspect of the experience.

Taken together, these factors make Uruguay bird hunting an incredible opportunity for hunters from North America, especially when chillier seasons and make conservation-based restrictions make hunting at home a less attractive option. But even hunters with no complaints about the season at home flock to the South American country, with many making it an annual tradition. The mix of fair weather, fine hunting and excellent service make Uruguay too tempting to pass up.
