Oh, and I finally want to add that this scene is made all the more powerful because throughout the entire film we don’t see will displaying any vulnerable emotion. He’s the tough, know-it-all, i dont give a fuck youngster. In this scene, he lets his feelings that have been buried for all those years out for the first time. I could never imagine will crying in the first half of the film, but you believe it in this scene. This is why Matt Damon is awesome, he is so convincing in this role.

Also, because he wasn’t love as a child, he has a very deep dislike for himself. This is why he is unmotivated in life despite being a genius letting his talent go to waste.

This is why he panics when skylar asks him to move interstate with her. He is afraid of committing to the relationship, let alone talking about his personal life with her, because he doesn’t want to risk being emotionally hurt. It’s also the reason he hangs out with friends that are much less intelligent than him – he feels at complete ease with them. That and they love him dearly (hence why the fought for him at the start of the film).

Will was extremely abused by multiple foster parents as a child. Obviously, that is not his fault, he was an innocent child. As a teen and young adult, his childhood suffering has shaped the way he is. He has a fear of abandonment (as mentioned in this scene), and is afraid to commit to relationships because of a fear of abandonment, a fear of becoming hurt physically and emotionally, as a result of how he was meant to trust his foster parents as a kid but they abused this trust by hurting him

i did see the whole film, i just don’t really understand what isnt his fault. are they trying to imply that his dad killed his mom (or just hurt her?) and he’s been blaming himself all this time?

how can say it’s so emotional if you don’t understand what the scene is about? I suggest you download or buy the film, because the entire film leads up to this moment, and you need to understand what went on in the movie prior to this in order to appreciate why this scene happened and why it’s so powerful

The scene is meant to be ambiguous so you can apply it to yourself.

Yes, that would be Robin Williams. He was nominated for an Oscar in Dead Poets Society and he won one for his performance in this film, Good Will Hunting.
